The Brief
Recurring damp and mould in an Etwall cottage tackled at the source, with a full reinforced silicone render system across the cottage and garage — covered by our workmanship warranty.
The homeowner first got in touch with Advanced Wall Protection in April, reaching out over WhatsApp about a persistent problem in her Etwall cottage: recurring damp and mould that she’d been struggling to get on top of. The client sent through several photos of the affected areas straight away, which gave our team enough to put together a rough price for the works. The client had been advised that wall rendering on the cottage could help, and wanted a proper plan to fix the problem for good rather than a quick fix.
Following the initial WhatsApp enquiry and rough price, one of our surveyors carried out a full site survey to scope the job accurately. With the walls properly measured and inspected in person, we put together a detailed, itemised quotation covering rendering materials and labour, scaffolding, and waste removal — with no hidden extras. The client reviewed the options and confirmed she was happy to proceed, and the project was booked in to start in August.
The Problem
Before any rendering work began, we made sure the cause of the damp and mould was properly understood rather than just covered over. The project had four things to solve:

Once scaffolding was erected in August, our on-site team carried out a thorough inspection of the affected elevations, using the full access the scaffold provided to examine the walls closely and identify the likely source of the problem.
The Solution: A Full Reinforced Silicone Render System
We recommended a full reinforced silicone rendering system across the cottage and garage walls (excluding the chimney and the property’s additional garden walls, at the client’s request). We explained to the client exactly why silicone render was the right fix for this kind of issue: it’s highly water-repellent, which stops rainwater penetrating the external walls, while remaining vapour-permeable — allowing any moisture already trapped within the wall to escape. Together, this keeps the masonry drier and removes the damp conditions that let mould take hold, rather than simply hiding the symptoms.
A crisp white silicone render finish was applied across the cottage and garage, giving a clean, smooth uniform look that complements the property’s oak-effect window and door frames. Scaffolding and the associated council paving licence were arranged by Advanced Wall Protection but invoiced directly to the client by the scaffolding company, as agreed upfront and confirmed transparently at every stage.

The Process, Step by Step

Initial enquiry (April).
The client got in touch over WhatsApp about her ongoing damp and mould problem, sending through photos of the affected areas so our team could put together a rough price.

Site survey.
One of our surveyors carried out a full site survey to accurately scope the job, measuring the walls and inspecting the property in person.

Following the survey, we provided a detailed, itemised quotation covering the cottage and garage, excluding the chimney and garden walls at the client’s request.

With the scaffold in place, our expert applicators carried out a close inspection of the affected walls to confirm the likely cause of the damp and mould before proceeding.

Preparation.
The existing render and brickwork were fully prepared, including any necessary repairs, before application began.

Our team applied the complete silicone render system — base coat, alkali-resistant reinforcement mesh, primer, and the coloured silicone finish coat — across the cottage and garage, keeping the site clean and tidy throughout.

A member of our team went through the completed work with the client to make sure she was happy with everything before the job was finalised and invoiced.
Throughout the project, our team kept the client updated at every stage — from the initial WhatsApp enquiry in April through to completion in August, including proactively flagging an oversight on the scaffolding paving licence fee as soon as it came to light — so there were no unwelcome surprises.
